Liturgies and Assemblies 2017
Several events happened on this last day of school in 2017. First, there was a school-wide Mass, followed by a ceremony to honour Mr Gerald Lee, the first Director and Advisor of St Joseph’s Family of Schools who also founded the schools. He retired on this day. There was also a simple ceremony to send Mr Lee off as a mark of high appreciation for his generous contribution towards the schools all these years. He was accompanied by his wife, Mrs Evelyn Mora Lio Lee.

Next, there were the presentations of academic awards for both primary and secondary students.

Finally, there was an original song composed, played and sang by Elaine Su Xin Yi and her friends from the Music Club. To top it up, the School Concert Band played two Christmas songs and the School Rally.
On 13 October 2017, two significant events in the school took place. First, there were 46 Primary Four and Primary Five students who received Holy Communion for the first time during the school-wide Mass presided by Fr Alvin Ng, SJ. It is considered a very important rite of passage for young Catholics.

Second, the Form Five students went through a graduation ceremony, another significant rite of passage where they completed their secondary school education and now prepare themselves to step into their next stage of life. The scrolls and blessings were given by Fr Francis Lim, SJ, the Principal of the school.

Forty five Form Four students of SJPS received the Sacrament of Confirmation within a Mass presided by the Archbishop of Kuching, His Grace Simon Poh on 29 September 2017 (Friday) at 7.45pm at St Joseph’s Cathedral.
The others who received the same Sacrament for the English-speaking group came from SMK St Joseph, SMK St Teresa, the Sunday School students of the cathedral parish and RCIA candidates. In total 229 students were confirmed at this Mass.

On 18 September 2017, St Joseph’s Private School had its celebration of Malaysia Day (16 September) on the ground floor of the school. It started with a Mass presided by Fr Francis Lim, SJ and concelebrated by Fr Alvin Ng, SJ, to pray for the nation.
After that, there were performances by students and teachers that boosted patriotism for our beloved country, Malaysia, on its 54th anniversary. Among these were “Fashionlicious” – a fashion show of the past, present and future; “deklamasi sajak” and “Sejahtera Malaysia” song by Form Four students; “deklamasi sajak” and “Sehati Sejiwa” song by the Primary School teachers; “Kamek Orang Sarawak” performance from The White Rajah of Sarawak; dance performance called “Nightmare”; and as a finale, a mixture of local and Bollywood dances.
Also during the assembly, prizes for the ten highest collections of the Ora Et Labora RUN were given out by two representatives of the Old Josephians’ Association (OJA).

26 May 2017 (Friday)
The day’s celebration began with a Mass presided by Archbishop Simon Poh, the Roman Catholic Archbishop of Kuching and concelebrated by Fr Francis Lim, SJ and Fr Alvin Ng, SJ. In his homily, His Grace talked about padi harvest and being thankful to God for the many blessings we have received, especially for the gift of food, of parents and teachers.
After Mass there were some presentations to celebrate Teachers’ Day and Gawai. Among these were ballet, modern and cultural dances, and a strings ensemble performance.
The morning ended with a Go Bald Satellite Shave for Sarawak Children’s Cancer Society (SCCS). Our students raised RM24445.00

The Mass of Tuesday within the Octave of Easter was presided by Fr Christopher Soh, SJ, the Regional Superior of the Society of Jesus of Malaysia-Singapore and concelebrated by Fr Francis Lim, SJ and Fr Alvin Ng, SJ on 18 April 2017.
After the Mass, there was a school assembly where Ms Genevieve from Sarawak Children’s Cancer Society (SCCS) spoke on volunteering for SCCS and the upcoming Go Bald Campaign.
On 1 March 2017, Ash Wednesday Mass was celebrated in the school to begin the season of Lent. During the Mass, ashes were blessed and distributed to the people to signify the penitential aspect of the season. Besides both Primary and Secondary students, quite a number of parents attended.
After the Mass, a school assembly was held. The Taekwondo Club put on a show to demonstrate the skill and talents of its members in order to attract more members.
A school assembly was held on 20 February 2017. A special tribute was made during this assembly to remember Mr Rechard Mejin, our teacher who passed away suddenly of a heart attack on 10 February 2017. He was a retired teacher from SMK St Joseph who joined St Joseph’s Private School in January 2016.
During this assembly, prizes were given out to students who won first prize in KASA Swimming Championship and Swinburne English Debating Championship.

On 26 January 2017, a Chinese New Year celebration was held in the school. The celebration started with a Mass presided by Fr Alvin Ng, SJ and concelebrated by Fr Francis Lim, SJ and Fr Albert Jacobse, MHM.
It then continued with some students’ performances and ended with a lion dance.

The Opening Mass for the new academic year was presided by Fr Francis Lim, SJ, the principal of St Joseph’s Private Secondary School and concelebrated by Fr Alvin Ng, SJ on 9 January 2017.
After Mass there was a promotion by the Red Crescent members when they did a marching show. Furthermore, the Boys Brigade also presented their uniform body to get more new members.

St Joseph’s International School Kuching opened its doors to its first batch of students on 3 January 2017 which was the first day of school this year. There were three classes of Year 7 and one of Year 8.
On 6 January 2017, the opening Mass was presided by Archbishop John Ha of Kuching at St Peter’s Church, Padungan which is just next to the school. All students, teachers and some parents attended the first Mass of the school. After Mass, the Archbishop blessed the school building.
