The 2nd WORLD VIRTUAL CHOIR FESTIVAL held from 1st to 6th December 2020 saw choirs from 14 countries, namely Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Vietnam, Philippines, South Korea, China, Sri Lanka, India, Ghana, Italy, Poland, the United Kingdom and the USA overcoming the challenges of these troubled and uncertain times and coming together in a virtual choir festival to sing their hearts out.
The SJPS CHAMBER CHOIR won the Gold Medal with a total score of 85.25 with ‘LILENG’ – a Sarawak Kenyah Folktune with a contemporary choral arrangement by their conductor based on the original transcription and translations of the song by Dr Chong Pek Lin.
Under the guidance of their teacher-in-charge and conductor, Mr Benedict Lo, the choir adapted to online meetings, practices and rehearsals. The strength of their commitment and resolution kept them motivated and focused throughout months of intense schedules.
During the week-long festival, the choir members gained the invaluable experience of interacting with and learning from young people from around the world. They also attended workshops conducted by members of the jury of the 2nd WORLD VIRTUAL CHOIR FESTIVAL on organizing choir practices using online platforms and one on the history and development of the European Renaissance polyphony.
The Awards and Closing Ceremony on YOUTUBE on December 6th 2020 kept hearts racing and on the announcement of the SJPS CHAMBER CHOIR winning the Gold Medal, great happiness and the sense of achievement was immediately felt and shared all around – online.
